About PM Concepts

From 1993 through 1997 Seiichi Nagao, the founder of PM Concepts, actively managed the Japanese operations of a leading US firm providing project management training programs worldwide. PM Concepts, evolved from the existing Japanese operations, was founded in 1997 as a joint venture corporation, to meet an exploding demand for corporate programs in project management to the Japanese businesses. The regularly scheduled public sessions also started in 1997. Reorganizing a joint venture structure into a Japanese corporation in 2000, PM Concepts reinforced its organizational structure and its capacity to better serve its corporate clients with project management training and consulting. Our Project Management Professional Development Program has achieved the distinction of being the most comprehensive program in project management in Japan.

President's Profile

Seiichi Nagao
Before forming PM Concepts in 1997, Mr. Nagao established the Japanese operations for a leading US educational firm providing project management training. He consulted and trained project leaders of multinational corporate clients such as AT&T, Citibank, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Motorola, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, NCR, NTT, PETRONAS, and Toshiba in the Asia Pacific countries including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore. Mr. Nagao had, prior to joining the educational firm, managed large projects as a senior project manager for a development firm in Los Angeles, leading multicultural and multidisciplinary teams. His hands-on experience in project management covers all phases of project, including feasibility studies, planning, financing and JV formation, entitlement, and variance control. His negotiating skill, together with financial knowledge has recovered more than a few troubled projects. He completed his education at the University of California, Berkeley, earning an MBA. He received a BS in marketing and management, also from U.C. Berkeley, after having begun his study of economics at Kobe University of Commerce in Japan. He is a member of PMI® and a certified PMP® since 1993.

Why Project Management now?

Is there a magic formula for success in today's business? Dynamic changes in businesses force many organizations to be highly specialized, flexible, and proactive to the changes. While many decision-makers are struggling with inflexible organizational structures, sophisticated strategies and new ways of operation become a must for survival, along with the ability and the drive to make them work. Organizations that have adopted consistent project management practices have succeeded in making new ways work. They demonstrated their decisive edge over those that haven't. Project management helped them reduce time-to-market, and has ensured predictability of schedule, of cost, and of quality of the deliverables. To achieve best result with highest productivity, however, project teams need to be trained to function cohesively, and a corporate culture must evolve to align with the ideas and concepts in project management.

What Makes PM Concepts' Program Different ?

Simulative: PM Concepts takes "changes" into its methodologies.

A scheduling technique, which doesn't simulate assumptions and constrains in resource allocation and estimating, would most likely fail when the incompatible factors become surfaced as risks in a project..

Practical: PM Concepts provides practical skills.

There is no single "correct" answer to the success of project. There is more realism in thinking "How Not To Fail" than "How To Succeed." We know theoretical understanding alone would not go far enough in managing projects. PM Concepts recognizes the "learning-by-mistakes" in workshop is the best alternative to years of apprenticeship.

Customized: PM Concepts custom-designs its training programs.

A training program would not be effective unless it addresses the issues and satisfies the specific needs of each organization. PM Concepts, therefore, customizes texts and case studies in effort to provide best solutions for organization-specific problems in project management. Our experience of custom design effort over 16 years produced vast amount of knowledge and skills to accommodate clients' specific needs in a various industry.

PM-Focused: PM Concepts is specialized in Project Management.

PM Concepts focuses its entire efforts on project management, and its expertise is endorsed by its clients' voices. The consultation and training program PM Concepts offers are intended to resolve a various problems in managing projects, while inspiring PM practitioners to promote professionalism in project management.

What Consulting Services do we offer?

Problem-Solving:

Project management needs are not met through training alone. A variety of other factors that bear on ultimate project success must be identified and addressed. Over the last five years PM Concepts has been providing its consulting services to identify and address a various project management needs. Analyzing problems in a client organization is our starting point. Our aim is to help an organization evolve into project-management-driven task forces overcoming existing problems in project management. We help them find their solutions with benchmarking, know-how, policy-making, decision-alternatives, and other advices on change management. Discussing with all the relevant members of client organization first to define objectives, scope, key deliverables, responsibility, schedule, and costs of the consulting takes place. The consulting services then move forward forming a team with client representatives that communicates throughout the entire organization the "found" problems, solves them, and monitors the progress to ensure an organizational transformation.

Procedure Standardization:

Project Concepts helps develop a consistent project management methodology best fitted to each organization. A project manager, even after the training, cannot take a systematic approach in project management unless an organization promotes a standardized methodology for managing projects. Unless the organization develops and documents its own standardized policies and procedures, and demonstrates its continuity to implement them throughout the organization, the project manager's effort will meet a limited success. PM Concepts helps client's task force standardize project management methodologies with ready-for-use tools and templates, and help solve procedural problems to ease implementation phase. Drawing on its experience and expertise in dealing with the unique needs, PM Concepts maximizes a client's investment in methodology standardization by fine-tuning its solutions to meet the client's characteristics.

Project Management Walkthrough:

PM Concepts offers on-site supports to clients' critical projects. We often hear from the training participants voices that "We don't know exactly where and how to practice the learned skills in existing structure." or "A team is not organized in such a way that supports full implementation of a systematic project management methodology." A pragmatic solution to these problems is to get our walkthrough services. Our professionals work with clients' project managers as mentors on site. In real projects, our experts will offer real guidance and advises. Throughout the life cycle of a "model" project, they will act as coaches and mentors dedicated to transferring their skills to the project managers and helping them achieve project success. PM Concepts firmly believes that only when dealing with client's specific problems in a practical manner, we can accelerate the process of integrating the learned skills with organizational procedures, thereby achieving organization-wide internalization of a consistent methodology of managing project.
